Grad Money Holder Tutorial

It's that time of year...Graduation....My oldest will be graduating from 8th grade, and we also have numerous other family graduating this summer - so I was in need of something that I could mass produce. These money holders are easy to create and personalize.

See Template

I used the above template I created to make this simple money holder. The "Class of 2008" was easy to create, using my Just Rite Stamp DIY Monogram Stampers - these are great for personalizing your projects as well.

Here's a view of the inside - On the top of the insert (6-1/8" x 2-7/8") - I've attached a 1-1/4" circle folded in half - I stamped my sentiment from Great Grads in black, punched it out with my word window punch, added a piece of red grosgrain, and stapled these items as shown. Be careful not to staple too far down - as this is what will hold your money at the top. At the bottom, I used my Slit Punch to create an opening that will keep my money in place when inserting it into the holder.

Details:
Stamps - Great Grads, Just Rite Stampers
Card Stock - Red, White, Ballet Blue
Ink - Black
Other - Slit punch, Scallop Punch, 1-1/4" Circle Punch, Word Window Punch, 1-3/8" Circle Punch, Red Grosgrain, Western Sky DSP

Here's the Just Rite items I used

Bloggers Challenge - Chipboard

This weeks bloggers challenge was to use chipboard in a project or on a card. Pretty easy for me - cause I love chipboard. I created a wedding squash book - my chipboard is covered by the Damask Notepad designer paper - perfect for a wedding! The sentiment is from Flourishes Wedding Essentials set, and the beautiful ribbon is also available at Flourishes.

Details for squash book:

  • 36 inches of ribbon
  • Chipboard (cut 2 - 5" x 5")
  • Patterned Paper (cut 2 - 6" x 6" )
  • Card Stock (cut 3 - 8 1/2" x 8 1/2", score in half, open and fold in half the other way, open and fold on a diagonal. You'll now have 2 squares and 4 triangles. Line up the squares in this order: facing up, facing down, facing up. Overlap the squares and attach with adhesive. Push the triangular sides in and "squash" into a square.
  • Cover your chipboard pieces with your patterned paper
  • To adhere ribbon, fasten it to the underside of one chipboard cover
  • Squash the album. Use sticky strip to adhere the covers to the album.
  • Tie the ribbon in the front to hold the book closed.

Wild Wasabi Promo = Gift Card Holder Tutorial

Since I still had my Wild Wasabi promo pack on my desk, I thought I'd see what else I could create with the already pre-scored card stock....Here's what I came up with, a perfect gift card holder for Mother's Day....I paper pieced the vase using my Afternoon Tea Designer Series Paper. To add color to the flowers I used the Pencil Over Marker Technique (TJNL) using Cameo Coral, Certainly Celery Markers, and various colored pencils.

To create my gift card holder - I took my already cut and scored Wild Wasabi paper, cut it so it measured 4 1/4" x 11 1/2". I then added score marks at 6 1/4" and 6 7/8". This is what my piece looked like after I added my score marks

I used my corner rounder (remove the guard) to make the scallop edge on the flap. To create the holder for my gift card, I used my slit punch. To mark my spot for the gift card, I placed a business card (it's the size as a gift card) onto my card stock. Using my bone folder, I lightly made lines at the edge of my business card like this:

Remember, you'll need to match your punch as shown below so your gift card will fit properly -

<-----Can you see my line I drew with the bone folder? It needs to match with the centering lines I drew with the sharpie marker

Repeat punch on the other side

After punching, your gift card will fit nicely.

To finish my gift card holder, I made a notch on the one side with my rectangle punch, so my Chocolate Twill would stay in place when the recipient opens the card. By making the extra score marks (as indicated earlier), this folds nicely into a regular invitation size envelope for mailing. When removed it stands freely.

ISC Box Challenge

The Design Team at Innovative Stamp Creations was issued a challenge by Betsy to create a box, and something to go into the box using only the images from the Fansy Designs Plate. Inspired by the Color Collage technique from the April TJNL, I created my own patterned paper using images from the Fansy Designs plate.

To create the base piece for my stamped images, I repeatedly stamped the small square flower image in Creamy Carmel on white card stock. I continued to add my other images using Rose Red, More Mustard, Certainly Celery and Bashful Blue, and Chocolate Chip inks. When finished I edged my white card stock using a sponge dauber and chocolate chip ink.

The Tag image from this plate fits perfectly with Stampin' Up!'s tag punches, here I stamped the image in More Mustard and layered it on Chocolate Chip. In the center of my stamped flower, I've added a brown Dew Drop.

Now what to put inside the box??? I thought this box would be great for gift cards - I stamped my paper for the inside that holds my gift card to match the outside of the box. I added a 1 1/4" circle punch to the center with a Jumbo Eyelet and tied on some Chocolate Twill. I used my Slit Punch hold my gift card.

Note: If you decide to make this box - remember to punch your circle in your box base before you assemble.

Faux Shimmer Sheetz Revisited

The 02/08 TJNL uses the Aged Metal Technique I filmed, which uses Shimmer Sheetz. As an alternative to Shimmer Sheetz, Gerrie posted a tutorial she did to create Faux Shimmer Sheetz. This got me to thinking what else do I have on had that I can use to recreate the this look. While my faux sheetz do not have the same shimmer at the real sheetz - they still have a lovely shine to them.

To create my faux shimmer sheetz - I spread open a piece of saran wrap, then dabbed some Radiant Rain Mist Daubers onto the saran wrap. Flip the saran wrap ink side down onto your glossy card stock, smoosh, spreading the rain mist. Remove saran wrap, let dry. Now you're all set to finish your technique.

Damask Gift Box Tutorial

While working on another project with the Damask image, I realized my score marks were not in the right place, so I improvised and came up with a template for a box, rather than throw the pieces on my recycle pile.

Here's the finished view - the box uses the Damask image and Many Sentiments both from Flourishes. To add some depth to my brocade blue card stock I used the Faux Denim technique from a past issue of the TJNL.

Here's the dimensions for the lid (click to enlarge

Cut your card stock to 5" x 3 3/4"
score 1/2" on all sides
Cut on the bold lines as indicated

You can use your fiskars scoring blade, I used my Mini Scor-It from Betsy at Innovative Stamp Creations.

Dimensions for the bottom (click to enlarge)

Cut card stock 5 1/2" x 4 1/4"
Score 13/16" on all sides
Cut as indicated

I used sticky strip on my tabs so that my box would hold securely in place.

Designer Series Paper Bag Tutorial

I've had quite a few emails and comments asking for a tutorial on the DSP Bags that I posted here. So, I've written a tutorial. Once you start making these I'm sure you'll find all sorts of different boxes to use as your base template. I've experimented a bit and made a smaller version to hold Love Note sized cards and envelopes (3"x3" size). You'll follow the same directions for these - just adjust your designer series paper size for the smaller bag- I cut mine to 9 1/2" x 4" to make the smaller version shown here.

Designer Series Paper Bag Tutorial
Supplies:
Designer Series Paper (DSP) cut to 12"x6" - for large sized bag
Snail or Sticky Strip
Scor-It (or any scoring tool)
Box (I used the ones my checks come in)

Place your DSP onto your Scor-It and score 3/4" on one edge (this will be come your trim when folded)

Add Snail to the flap and fold over ***note if you want to have a scallop edge - make sure you scallop before taping down your flap.

Wrap the DSP around a box (here I used the box my checks come in) over lap your edges and secure with Snail.

Begin to fold your edges in (like you are wrapping a present and secure them with snail).

When finished the bottom should look like this -

Embellish as desired

If you decide to make these, please leave a link in the comments, I'd love to take a look!

Card Stock Desk Calendar Tutorial

What better way to start off 2008, than with a quick tutorial for a simple desk calendar!

Not so much of a show and tell type of tutorial - as these need just a few score marks - and your done.

To make the longer calendar

        • cut your card stock to 5 1/2" x 8 1/2"
        • score from the 8 1/2" side at 1 1/2", 4 1/2" and 7 1/2"
        • add layers to your calendar base as desired
        • print out your calendar (there's many different ones floating around SCS) on printer paper, use your Crop-a-Dile to punch the holes and add your brad (I used the Tim Holtz Hammer to add a distressed look to my brads). Adhere to a piece of card stock, then to your base.
        • fold your base on the score lines attach some sticky strip to the 1" side and attach as shown

        For the smaller calendar

Just cut your base card stock to 3 3/4" x 8 1/2" - then follow the steps above

Bind It All Post it Note Holder Tutorial

Bind It All Post it Note Holder
        By Lisa Somerville

        Supplies:
        Bind It All
        ¾” Bind It All Coil
        Glue Stick
        Post It Notes
        Chip Board 3 ½” x 3”
        4 pieces of Designer Series Paper 3 ½” x 3”

Apply Glue stick to your chip board and adhere your designer series paper to the front and back.

Repeat with the other piece of chip board.

Place your covered chip board into your Bind It All as shown –being sure to center it, punch your holes. (Note, I’m using the new spacebar that Zutter came out – so my coils are closer to the edge of my book)

Place your coil into the chip board, being sure that the fronts are facing each other.

Place your coil and chip board pieces into your Bind It All and coil your book closed.

Adhere your post it note pad inside your coiled book.

        Decorate front as desired.

        Marker Misting Tutorial

Here's a great twist on the Smackin' Acetate Technique - 06/03 TJNL.

        Marker Misting

Lisa Somerville – Independent Stampin’ Up! © Demonstrator

        Supplies:
        Black Stazon
        SU Markers
        Spritz bottle
        Acetate
        Open Image Stamps
        Glossy Card Stock

Ink stamp with stazon, stamp on acetate. Let dry.

Flip your acetate over – you’ll be working on the back side, color with markers as desired.

        Lightly spritz acetate.

Place the acetate spritz sided down onto your glossy card stock – you’ll see the color begin to vein and spread. Finish card as desired.

        Finished Card

An alternate way to do this technique would be to stamp your images on glossy card stock using black stazon. Color all images with markers. Mist a piece of acetate, smack it on top of your colored images. Remove the acetate immediately so it doesn’t stick to your glossy card stock.

        3" x 3" Circle Shaker - using Tab Punch

I saw a post on SCS for using the Round Tab Punch to make a circle in your card stock and I thought it would be great for making Circle Shaker Cards.

Directions for the Double Pouch Bag can be found here.
        Stamps: Innovative Stamp Creations

        3"x 3" Circle Shaker Cards

        Supplies:
        Round Tab Punch
        Card Stock - 3" x 3"
        Acetate 2 3/4" x 2 3/4"
        Beads
        Stamped Image - cut to 2 3/4" x 2 3/4"
        Foam Tape
        6" x 3" piece of card stock - folded to 3" x 3"

Push your Round Tab Punch in as far as it will go on your 3" x 3" card stock, and punch

Rotate your card stock and punch again with the Round Tab Punch.
        Trim your card stock to 2 3/4" x 2 3/4"

Adhere your acetate to your card stock with snail, and swipe with the embossing buddy, so your beads don't stick.

Place your foam tape around your opening, being sure that the ends meet.

Place a small amount of beads on the acetate. Gently remove the backing from the tape, being careful not to let any beads get on the adhesive.

Place your stamped image piece, stamped side down, so that it sticks to the foam tape. Press securely in place. Adhere to base card. (as shown in top photo)

On my bag - I also made Faux Brads

        How to make Faux Brads

Run your card stock through your xyron. Punch with the double circle punch. Remove paper backing and adhere where you'd like you faux brads to be. Place Crystal Effects or Ranger Glossy Accents over the faux brads, let dry.

        Bind It All Card Organizer

        Bind it All Card Organizer

Here's a quick and easy card organizer you can make using a few sheets of card stock, some Embellishment Papers, a Bind It All, and chipboard.

(click to enlarge) inside view with cards

        • Cover your chipboard with your embellishment paper, then punch your holes with the Bind It All
        • To make the inside pockets - use a piece of 9 3/8" x 7 13/16" card stock. Score 2" up from the bottom to create your pocket. Score 4 11/16" in (from the 9 3/8" side) for your middle score. Fold in half, fold your 2" pocket up. Adhere your Embellishment Papers to the 2" area if desired. Then place into your Bind It All and punch. Repeat as desired for the number of pocket pages you want for your book
        • Add coil binding. I used a 3/4" coils for my book - I added 4 pocket pages
        • Embellish the front cover as desired

Stamps - Rustic Artsy Swirls Sentiment - Artsy Trinkets #1

ETA - Melissa asked "does each 9 3/8 x 7 13/16 sheet make one single sided pocket or one double sided pocket? Oh my I have another question, which side do you put into the coils; the folded side (which would then open up or the other side which would ensure a single page)??? "

Hopefully this visual will help you out - out of your 9 3/8 x 7 13/16 you will have created 2 pockets when scored - you'll punch the BIA holes on the open side (remember to have all your scores in place before punching - this way you are punching through all layers at the same time)

        Scallop 3D Ornament Tutorial

Recently while cleaning up my stamp area, I ran across a Basic Grey Ornament Kit I had purchased some time ago - I thought I'd try making them using my Scallop Punch and Dashing Designer Series Paper - here's the end result

        Scallop 3D Ornament Tutorial

        Supplies you'll need:

        20 Scallops punched from DSP
        Elastic Cord
        Snail
        Scoring Tool
        Pretties Kit

Score a triangle on all your scallop pieces and crease

Select 5 scallop pieces for your ornament top. Using your snail, adhere one flap from two different circles, make sure that the triangle points meet, and your scallop edges are flush. Use this same process to attach the remaining 3 scallop pieces to complete the top of your ornament. Repeat to create your bottom piece. Set these aside.

Using your snail adhere the remaining 10 scallop pieces together, alternating the points up and down as shown to form a straight section

Snail the two ends together to form a ring, this will become the middle of your ornament

To finish your ornament, thread your elastic cord through the center of your top piece, tie on a bead from the Pretties Kit, using snail, adhere the flaps from the top to the available flaps of the middle section. Thread the cord through the center of the bottom, adhere the bottom flaps to the available middle section. Tie a Pretties Bead on the end of your elastic cording.

At this point, if you'd like to stamp your card box, do so before continuing on to the next step

Adhere sticky strip to the inside of the bottom flap (I did have a picture but my DS deleted it tonight while playing with the camera)....Fold in the side flaps, and adhere the bottom flap to the side flaps as shown

Using your paper snips - clip as shown

Use your corner rounder to round the corners of the ¾” flap

Adhere flaps with snail and secure in place

        Glue Stick
        Bind It All
        BIA Coil – I used ½” - although the ¾” would work
Mono Adhesive Tape or Sticky Strip
        Bone Folder
        2 – 4” Chipboard Covers

Cover your 4” chipboard front and back using glue stick and the pieces of 4”x 4” DSP – set aside. (If desired you can sand the edges with a sanding block and add ink with a sponge dauber)

Using the following diagrams place your DSP pieces onto your 4” and 2” panels of card stock

Now you’re ready to use your Bind It All to punch your pages

Set your Bind It All to “C” (cover) and punch your front and back covers

Set your Bind It All to “D” (inner pages) and punch your inner pages as shown (it may help to refer to the photos above as to where the DSP was placed)

Fold in one of the 2” flaps on page 1 – insert into your Bind It All and punch

Fold in the 2” flap on page 2 (that does NOT have DSP on both sides) – insert into your Bind It All and punch

Fold in one of the 2” flaps on page 3 – insert into your Bind It All and punch

Now you are going to attached your pages together as follows

Lay pages 1 and 2 down – front view up. Adhere tape to the right 2” panel on page 1 and adhere it to the left 2” panel on page 2 (making sure to line it up with the punches from the Bind It All)

This is a view of page 1 after it’s been attached to page 2

Lay page 2 down so that you are working on the back of the 4” panel, add tape and adhere it to the back 4” back panel of page 3 (making sure to line it up with the punches from the Bind It All)

This is a view of all pages when taped together

Now you are ready to add the coil to your book

Assemble in order from left to right

Back cover, front cover, and pages (note the 2” panels from page 3 are on the top). Slide in the double OWire binding.

Adjust the micro variable knob to the size wire you are using, place the book into the wire closing channel, bring down the handle and release.
